The Zealous Laborers
OBERON Shows
August 3, 2017 at 8PM

The Zealous Laborers, an evening-length dance work, is a collaboration between choreographers Lorraine Chapman and David Parker dealing with the legacy of The Shakers, a Christian sect founded in the 18th century and now nearly extinct. Chapman and Parker are interested in grappling with their artistic legacy through dance. "The Zealous Laborers" is set to a wide variety of music from traditional Shaker hymns to Aaron Copland's treatment of their "Simple Gifts" from Appalachian Spring.

Like dancers, The Shakers saw physical discipline as a sacred rite which brings transcendence, they believed that transformation from earthly to divine is achieved through the quality of their craftsmanship, and they sublimated physical desires in the interest of authentic expression.
