Join the rehearsal ensemble for Death and the Powers: The Robots' Opera

The A.R.T.. is seeking actors/dancers/musicians/scientists to be a part of the experimental rehearsal process for the new opera, Death and the Powers: The Robots' Opera, coming to the A.R.T. next season.

When the eccentric patriarch Simon Powers downloads himself into The System, his entire house comes to life around his family and friends. A groundbreaking new production developed by the MIT Media Lab in partnership with the A.R.T., Death and the Powers explores what we leave behind for the world and our loved ones, using specially designed technology and an expressively animated stage, including a chorus of robots and a musical chandelier. Machover, called “America’s most wired composer” by the L.A. Times, distinctively blends technological and artistic finesse to create a score that is passionately inventive, yet filled with arching melodic lines.Death and the Powers, which receives its world premiere in Monaco in the fall of 2010, is supported by Futurum Association (Monaco), and will be presented in collaboration with Chicago Opera Theater, in association with Opera Boston.

"Death and the Powers examines fundamental questions of love and legacy through a wildly futuristic lens. How exhilarating it has been to create this work with such remarkable collaborators, and with the combined and complementary forces of the MIT Media Lab and the A.R.T."   — Tod Machover

We are seeking to assemble a committed workshop ensemble to develop epic staging moments in the show - specifically for a major scene when an ensemble of 40 people storm the stage as the "miseries of the world."  Participants will work directly with Karole Armitage (Armitage Gone!, Choreographer of HAIR) and Diane Paulus to experiment with different ways of staging this event.  Seeking all ages, 6 to 106.  If you are interested in being a part of the creation of new collaboration in music, theater, science, art, and opera - we would love to have you join us!

The schedule in July/August is as follows:

Saturday, July 31st - 6pm - 9:30pm - on stage rehearsal  (please bring costume with you - see below)
Monday, August 2nd - 5:30pm - 9:30pm - full tech (in costume)
Tuesday, August 3rd - 5:30pm - 9:30pm - runthrough  (in costume)

Here is the costume information from the costume designer, David Woolard.  The costuming will be a collection of your own wardrobe, and enhanced by David:
The miseries are the miseries of the world so all clothing ethnicities and regionalisms are welcome.  Try to bring bland colored clothes: grey, brown, tan. They can be torn and dirty. We will be adding some shawls and dirty bandages to you as well.
