Cherry Jones

Founding company member Cherry Jones returns to the American Repertory Theater in the title role of Lysistrata. She appeared in over twenty productions between 1980 and 1991, including the title role in Major Barbara, Irina in Three Sisters, Viola in Twelfth Night, Grusha in The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Cherestani in The Serpent Woman, Sofya in Platanov, Elise in The Miser, Rosaura in Life is a Dream, Angela in The King Stag, Regan in King Lear, Mother in the premiere of Christopher Durang's Baby with the Bathwater, and Merry Chase in the premiere of Larry Gelbart's Mastergate.

This past fall, Ms. Jones once again played Major Barbara, this time for the Roundabout Theatre Company. Her other Broadway appearances include the Lincoln Center Theater production of The Heiress, for which she won the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics' Circle and Drama League awards; the revival of Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten with Gabriel Byrne and Roy Dotrice (Tony Award nomination); Our Country's Good (Tony Award nomination); The Night of the Iguana, Angels in America; Macbeth; and Stepping Out. Regional and Off-Broadway credits include the Old Globe and Lincoln Center Theater productions of Pride's Crossing (Drama Desk, Outer Critics' Circle, and Lucille Lortel awards), The Baltimore Waltz (Obie Award), The Good Person of Setzuan (Joseph Jefferson Award), I Am a Camera, The Seagull, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Goodnight Desdemona/Good Morning Juliet.

Next summer, Ms. Jones will be seen in the feature film Signs, directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. Other films include Wolfgang Peterson's The Perfect Storm and Stephen Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich, with Julia Roberts. She also appeared in Tim Robbins' Cradle Will Rock and in The Horse Whisperer, directed by Robert Redford.

Her work on television includes the Lifetime movie What Makes a Family opposite Brooke Shields and Whoopi Goldberg, the PBS Masterpiece Theater adaptation of Langston Hughes' Cora Unashamed, and two appearances opposite Gene Wilder in the A&E mysteries Murder in a Small Town and The Lady in Question.
