Make no mistake - the nightmarish quality of Cabaret is omnipresent, accentuated by the ghostly, powdery makeup adorning the faces and bodies of the Kit Kat Dancers, the lonely, hollow sound of a train whistle, the blinding white spotlight emulating an oncoming train, and the gruesome closing scene that sears itself into your retina.

"Cabaret" seemed like an odd choice for a follow-up to the American Repertory Theater’s amazing first season under the artistic direction of Diane Paulus. But Paulus once again proves she knows how to pick a winner.
"Cabaret," which runs until October 30 at OBERON, forces audience members to enter a world that at first glance might seem like a far cry from the streets outside. It’s self-aware and understands the possibility for theater to become removed from the patrons it entertains, while still feeling emotionally relevant.
